AKA What are the entry level plants versus the drama queens that can keep you stressing?
Not all plants are created equal. Some are chill roommates who are ok with neglect, while others demand your undivided attention. Whether you’re new to plant parenting or ready for a challenge, here’s how to tell who’s who in the world of houseplants.
The Forgiving, Easier Crew
These plants aren’t unkillable, because there’s no such thing. But they are forgiving and hardier than their fussier counterparts. They can tolerate a mistimed watering, a dimmer corner, and still live to see another day – just don’t let them tolerate these conditions for too long.
Devil’s Ivy (Pothos)
A true survivor. Pothos can handle everything from bright light to near-darkness and will bounce back even after a dry spell.

Dracaena
Elegant, drought-tolerant, and content with medium light. These plants don’t ask for much — just avoid cold drafts and overwatering.
Golden Cane Palm
A low-effort way to get tropical vibes indoors. It’s forgiving of indoor conditions and even helps purify the air.
ZZ Plant
Glossy leaves, desert-level drought tolerance, and does well despite low light — the ZZ is basically the plant version of a camel.

Ficus Elastica (Rubber Tree)
Tough, glossy, and statuesque, the Rubber Tree loves bright indirect light but handles moderate light just fine.
Cast Iron Plant
It’s earned its nickname. The Cast Iron Plant shrugs off shade, dry air, and temperature swings like a champ.

The Fussy Bunch
The plants that like to keep you on your toes. These beauties are stunning and they know it. Expect a bit of trial and error before you earn their trust.
Velvet-Leaf Anthuriums
Those lush, velvety leaves need constant humidity, warmth, and gentle light. Don’t get their humidity right and they’ll pout (by turning brown). Great for advanced plant parents who love a challenge.
Orchids (All of Them)
Ah, orchids. The certified divas of the indoor jungle. They hate wet feet but also hate drying out. Their care is a total balancing act. They need bright, filtered light, specific potting media, and stable humidity.
When they flower, though? All worth it.
Ferns (in Low Humidity Homes)
Ferns crave constant moisture and humidity. In dry climates, their fronds crisp up faster than toast. Keep them near a humidifier or in a brightly lit, steamy bathroom to keep them lush.
Cacti (in Low Light Homes)
Desert plants need light and lots of it. In dark homes, they stretch out to find light (a process called etiolating), lose shape, and weaken. Without strong sun, even the toughest cactus will struggle.
Carnivorous Plants
They’re fascinating but fussy. They need pure, mineral-free water (rain or distilled only), bright light, and special soil. Oh, and never fertilise them — it burns their roots. Think of them as exotic pets, not decor.

Willow’s Tip
If you’re just getting started with plant ownership, stick to the easy-care crew until you’ve mastered the basics of watering, light, and humidity. Once your green thumb’s warmed up, graduate to the high-maintenance ones — and watch your plant care skills level up.
