How To Propagate: Air Layering Method

Air layering is great for propagation beginners, I really like this method because your plants do most of the work for you without having to cut limbs at the get go!

All you need is:

Step by step tutorial

1. Find a node

Find a node which you’d like to propagate from, usually four to six nodes back from the tip of the branch you’ve chosen.

2. Make a cut

With a clean knife make a few small 2mm deep incisions into the internode above your chosen node

3. Apply hormone

Apply hormone

4. Wrap in moss

Now make sure your sphagnum moss is moist, and wrap it around the node and incisions like a sausage roll. You want it somewhat tight as the moss will loosen up when it dries.

5. Make holes

Cover the moss with your plastic wrap a few times so it’s secure and tighten both ends with wire. Be sure to poke some holes into the moss so you can spray it with water afterward. This process only works if the sphagnum stays moist. After a few weeks you should be able to see roots growing into the sphagnum moss and this indicates you’ve successfully propagated your chosen section.

6. Cut and plant

You can unwrap the plastic and make a cut below the node you’ve chosen. This cutting can now go straight into moist moss or soil, just to be sure to keep it warm and moist as it starts to establish.
